FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 19, 2008 Russ Diamond Statement on Mauree Gingrich's Smear Tactics "Today, the voters of the 101st district have witnessed one of the most despicable and desperate attempts in memory to employ the politics of personal destruction in an effort to salvage a campaign that has been hamstrung by a serious integrity deficit from Day One. "I am appalled that Mrs. Gingrich and her supporters would stoop so low. There is no doubt that I have run a very aggressive campaign this year, but I have never strayed from limiting the discussion to the incumbent's performance as a public official and candidate. "To those ghouls who may be interested in my personal past, I can only say three things: First, this was already in the past when I first talked about it during my campaign four years ago. Second, only a scoundrel would attempt to put me in a position where I cannot speak to the details of the matter at hand, as addressing it would require infringing on the privacy of someone I care about deeply who has not chosen to be a public figure. Finally, it is curious that the hit-piece mailer did not mention that the individual who made these allegations unilaterally and voluntarily had the court cancel the related protection order. "To the decent people of the 101st district, I'll say that we have all experienced difficult times in our lives. I have had more than my share of bad times over the years - some of my own doing, some at the hands of others, and some a mixture of both. But all that is securely in the distant past and I have moved on. I have been held accountable for every action I have ever taken, right or wrong, and I can live in peace with that. "Far more important than dwelling on the past, however, are the lessons we learn from it and the manner in which we subsequently conduct our lives. My experiences have ingrained in me the true meaning of compassion, patience, dignity and most importantly, integrity. "For the last four years, I have dedicated my life and most of my free time to restoring integrity to government in Pennsylvania. I have done so as a volunteer and have exhausted a lot of my own resources on the effort. That my results have irritated numerous people in positions of power is no big secret, but I will continue along the same path if the voters of the 101st district see fit to elect me. "If Mrs. Gingrich and her supporters can hold their heads up proudly as they unleash their vicious attack on me and the privacy of another, so be it. But I believe they should hang their heads in shame. Anyone associated with this sort of tactic should be summarily cast aside and scorned by all decent citizens. "There is no use in Mrs. Gingrich denying her involvement in this smear campaign. She can hide behind as many organizational and financial smokescreens as she wants, but I have no doubt whatsoever that this was her doing, her call and her last-ditch attempt to try to make people forget her horrendous record as a public servant and candidate. "I am confident the good people of the 101st district will see this latest maneuver for exactly what it is - an act of utter desperation by someone addicted to feeding at the public trough who will stop at absolutely nothing to maintain that status." ### |
