Russ Diamond Responds to Gingrich's Desperate Hit-Piece Mailer

"Mauree Gingrich's negative mailer received on Saturday, April 12 by voters is an outlandish attempt by a desperate career politician to avoid discussing the clear lack of integrity in her own campaign. The phone poll she conducted last week must have revealed that her support has sunk to Chip Brightbill-esque lows. This hit-piece makes so many outlandish claims based on an oversimplified multiple choice questionnaire that it's pathetic.

"She complains that I opposed an amendment to protect the unborn in 2004. Where's the language for such an amendment? After four years, I still have not seen such language, so of course I can't support it. I do not offer support for anything I haven't had a chance to study.

"On the other hand, it was Mrs. Gingrich who last year voted to advance a bill to force Catholic hospitals to provide Plan B, the abortion pill, against their moral values. And it's Mrs. Gingrich who has regularly failed to act to keep Planned Parenthood from spending tax dollars on abortion.

"She complains that I oppose SB1250, the Marriage Protection Amendment. This only underscores her own complete lack of understanding of constitutional principles. SB1250 would insert the definition of marriage into Article I, the Declaration of Rights. But SB1250 enumerates no particular individual right. Therefore, SB1250's language is wholly inappropriate for inclusion in Article I.

"Of course I believe that marriage is between one man and one woman. But conservatives should be very careful about trying to amend Article I in this way. Let's not forget that there are now 1,000,000 more Democrats in Pennsylvania than there are Republicans. If conservatives get their way and SB1250 passes, how long will it be before the Democratic majority inserts some imagined 'right' to abortion, or a 'right' to health insurance at the expense of others?

"She complains that I was undecided about cloning human embryos in 2004. I was only undecided because I was not clear on the science or the purposes. If you're talking about getting women pregnant specifically for the purposes of creating clone farms, I would obviously oppose that. But if a man and wife could deliberately contribute sperm and egg, combine them in a petri dish and specifically create only a transplant organ to save the life of that same husband or wife or one of their children, that might be different. But again, I'm not a scientist, so I still can't form an educated opinion at this time.

"Finally, Gingrich's claims in the mailer regarding her forged petitions are stunningly oversimplified tidbits of the complete public record. If she wants people to stop talking about her forgery problem, she ought to just come out and reveal exactly how dozens of forged signatures ended up on a petition she testified was on her person at all times."

"Since I turned our evidence over to the Attorney General, I have not spoken about the issue at all, except when asked. I thank Mrs. Gingrich for giving me the opportunity to bring it up again and for the opportunity to set the record straight on my positions. Any voter who wants to view the complete record regarding Mrs. Gingrich's forgery problem can view it at http://www.russdiamond.org/forgery and judge for themselves."
