March 30, 2008 Diamond Response to Incumbent Shill's LTE Editor: Brian Craig’s recent letter attacking my positions on “conservative values” deserves a direct response. Craig, a county GOP committeeman and participant in the questionable petition drive of incumbent Mauree Gingrich, should know better than to try to take a few oversimplified questionnaire answers and spin them into full-blown position papers. Craig is absolutely correct in stating that children are statistically much better off when raised by a traditional mother and father. But a true conservative understands that big-government edicts proclaiming it to be so will not make it reality in our society. Conservatives should instead work to tear down and de-fund institutions that seek to legitimize government handouts and dependency as substitutes for a genuine parent. On abortion, Craig is just plain wrong. I do not support the killing of innocent human life in the womb. As a legislator, I will not support any use of tax dollars to fund abortion nor force any private institution to provide abortion services. Planned Parenthood, which has called itself “a powerful lobbying arm for abortion advocates,” lists Gingrich in its 2006 voter’s guide as being in favor of supporting such organizations with tax dollars. Further, Gingrich voted last year to advance a bill that would force Catholic hospitals to act against their moral values by providing the so-called “morning after pill.” Finally, Craig’s surrogate attack letter certainly should have identified him as an active candidate in a contested race for the county GOP committee. Is this the kind of dishonesty and lack of integrity we can expect in the future from Brian Craig and the candidates he supports? Russ Diamond Annville |
